I didn’t realise how difficult this was giong to be, when you look at the Blu Ray catalogue, it’s actually pretty good already! Since the death of the HD war studios have really ramped up their release rate and have obviously gone for their big, money making, releases up front. There may have been a couple you might not have agreed with in my first five (remember these aren’t in any particular order), but it may well get a bit more contentious here.

No.6 – I’ll start with the big guns, Lord of the Rings. You all knew it was coming so lets get it out of the way. There are various rumours floating around the web for when this is going to be released but in my opinion it won’t be this year. From what I can tell they’re going to do the same as they did with the DVDs as well and release the theatrical versions first, followed several months later by the extended cut. With the size of Blu Ray discs I was hoping that they’d release both on the same disc with seasmless branching (they’ve managed it on other films, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan etc.). This is one of the nice things about Blu Ray, you insert a disc and on some films, get to choose between the theatrical or extended cut. With LOTR it seems they’re really going to try and wring all the cash out of us that they can. I for one will bypass the theatrical versions and wait for the extended editions!

No.7 – I just checked the online retailers to see if this is already out and was surpised to find that it isn’t. The film is Aliens. I’m probably going to stir up a hornets nest here but I’m going to come out with it, I’m not a huge fan of the first film. There, I said it. As already discussed I’m a 6ft pansy when it comes to horror and suspense and as a kid this film scared the bejesus out of me (think I was 9 or 10 at the time and round a mates house). As a teenager however I discovered the second film and things had moved on a bit from the suspense and it was closer to an action film, now that suited me down to the ground, lots of Aliens and big guns! I’m also going to put in a request for the directors cut (or extended edition, whatever it was called) with the turret guns in. The rest of the added footage I wasn’t that bothered about but those turret guns kicked ass!

No.8 – The next is one of those films that I can watch time and time again (with a bit of a gap inbetween). I usually come back to it at least once every year at some point. The fim is Dune. I’ve owned the damn thing on pretty much every other format (I skipped laserdisc though, never had a player) so might as well get it on Blu Ray. I dont know why I love this film so much, it’s pace is a tad slow, it’s weird in places (I always thought that was down to David Lynch, but on reading the books it was already weird due to Frank Herbert) and the SFX are nothing to write home about. Funky body shields, knife fights and sound weapons were pretty cool though (infinite ammo with the sound weapons, unless you get a sore throat, maybe the gun should come with some lozengers!), add to that some rather large garden worms and some mumbo jumbo about a super-being and somehow you end up with a classic sci-fi masterpiece that i just keep coming back to.

No.9 – I am tending to go with the big action/sci-fi blcokbusters here as they’re the ones that, in my opinion, will benefit most from the better picture and sound afforded by Blu Ray. So along those lines I’ll offer up Jurassic Park. Again, not really that bothered by the sequels, just the original would be fine. The first time I saw this at the cinema it was a revelation of SFX. It was one of those films, along with Terminator 2, that redefined what was possible in filmaking imagery. It isn’t always a good thing, some films concentrate too much on the imagery and forget the plot, but Steven Spielberg was on top form here and had us spellbound from start to finish. Lets see those dinasaurs in 1080p goodness!

No.10 – And here we are at the end. There were several contenders for the last spot, Princess Bride, Conan the Barbarian, Beastmaster, Desperado, but in the end there could be only one (damn, already used Highlander, should’ve saved it for the last and could’ve gotten a good pun out of that!). I already have Monty Python’s Life of Brian on Blu Ray, but the one that I really want is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. For me this is one of the best comedies of all time. Packed with sheer zanyness (is that a word?) this has more quoteable sequences in than any other film (it’s a close run thing between this and Airplane, but Monty wins out!). It may be considered geeky to go around saying ‘we are the knights who say neee’ but I just don’t care (and the less said about shrubberies the better!). Life of Brian came out ages ago so I’ve no idea who’s dragging their arse bringing this out but hurry up!

OK, so it’s mostly action fims and sci-fi. I did manage to get a couple of comedies in there though. As already mentioned there were some other close contenders, Princess Bride is coming out on Blu shortly in America so hopefully it’ll make an appearance over here as well, Gladiator was also a close finisher, it’s not one that I rewatch time and time again, but it’s an epic that would look and sound great in HD. I wouldn’t mind a couple of the Kevin Smith films in HD as well, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Mallrats particularly. I think this highlights the fact that although they’ve already released some cracking movies on Blu Ray, there’s still plenty more that we want to see in full HD goodness!

I saw something today that made me think that all this hoo haa surrounding High Definition is a bit of a con. I walked into a store with a friend of mine who was looking for a surround sound kit and there right in front of the entrance was a TV playing ones of those Hi Def demo discs, the one where a black line moves from right to left comparing a blu-ray picture with that of a standard DVD. The DVD picture being portrayed as really blurry image next to the crystal clear blu-ray image, the standard DVD picture given as an example was so bad I was almost convinced that they were comparing VHS with DVD. The example film was Zulu (or Roarkes Drift) and I am almost tempted to buy it to see if the image really is that bad… or have they degraded the SD image to highlight a superior BD image? Well I think that they have. And I think if I can get the film they used in the demo myself it will prove that.

Although I may not even have to go that far to make a case for myself. The same friend that was looking for a surround sound kit ended up buying a RGB Scart for his DVD player and when we connected this all up at his house we played a movie, the movie was Fantastic Four, Rise of the Silver Surfer, the TV a brand new Panasonic Viera 46” Plasma. The opening credits of the film looked fine, and there is a point in the opening credits where the Silver Surfer flies past the moon on his way to Earth. This moon looked pretty cool, it was clear and crisp be it on pause or just playing the scene through, nothing at all like this blurred to hell scene that I am advised SD is from the demo disc. OK the TV we played this on is in my opinion a good TV, not the most expensive in the world sure, but a good TV, however we played this on a 7 year old £30 DVD player via a scart socket, on a TV big enough to show the flaws in the disc.

Now surely, this “crap” DVD player and scart connection would be absolute rubbish at putting a picture on screen, and maybe to some AV guru it wasn’t the very best that you can get, but without spending thousands and thousands it was a bloody good second.

So I think that they are purposely degrading the SD image on those HD demo discs you get or they record the image when it is connected via composite or s-video. Now my system indoors is a Denon 1940 connected via my AV Amp via gold plated component connections, the DVD players up-scales the DVDs too, a pretty good connection I thought although I am sure people will argue that there is better, I do know that I didn’t have to remortgage my house or sell an organ for the kit (although I have had a minor issue with the DVD player that I mention in a previous post).

On top of this Blu-Ray discs are expensive. I took a look at Amazon and took a random sample of 4 movies, here are the results.

Quantum of solace SD £12.98 the BD version £17.98
No country for old men SD £4.98 the BD version £9.98
Sweeney Todd SD £4.98 the DB £9.98
Black Hawk Down SD £3.98 the BD is £8.98

So if you bought these 4 films on SD you would pay a total of £26.92, on BD you would pay £46.92 that is £20 on the nose (or through the nose depending on your opinion). And judging from the results I’ve seen on a variety of systems I am not convinced that high definition is the way to go at the moment, at least not on anything up to an including a 46” plasma, just like I cannot tell the difference between 320kbps audio to 160kbps audio via my Ipod.

Back in January this year I needed a new DVD player as my old one was on its way out. A friend of mine recommended Denon as a good make and so I read a few reviews and decided on the Denon 1940. The 2 questions were what colour I wanted? and where would I buy it from?

The colour was simple, it had to be a silver unit, I thought it looked more elegant than the black and so that was the one that I went with. The second question about where to buy it from was a little more difficult. I wanted new rather than second hand so Amazon Marketplace was out of the question, I personally would not buy something like that via that method and I think Amazon didn’t have any silver ones in stock at the time. I rang a local AV supplier and found out the RRP was £250 (way above my budget) although he did say that he may be able to match a price if I found another from a bricks and mortar store.

Anyway I found one for £120 from Forum Hi-Fi in Nottingham, the price seemed a little too good to be true but the website looked pretty good, there was a telephone number and I called them, they were very helpful and informative and so I went ahead and ordered it. A few days later the player turned up at my place and everything was hunky dory, this was on 28th January 2009.

The first time the player went wrong I didn’t really take much notice. The problem was that when pressing the power button the unit wouldn’t power on, I powered the unit off (from the mains) and waited a few seconds and powered back on, it worked perfectly.

Then in March it happened to me again, and I was informed by my kids that the same problem had happened a couple of times to them too, so now this was a regular fault, I called Forum Hi-Fi and told them what had happened they explained that they had no Silver ones in stock, and that this was a known issue with some of the units and the way to fix it was power off by pulling the power lead out and waiting 5 minutes and connecting again, although I had done this before I tried again and low and behold it worked.

A few days ago as I write this on April 11th it happened again and finally got around to calling the shop today in order to find out what we can do and after this call I realised the issues of buying electrical equipment online. The guy I spoke to today was fairly helpful, Sure they would replace or fix my unit but I had to get it back to them at my expense… yes MY expense, even though this is a faulty unit I have to sent it back to them, and pay for it out of my own pocket, so that is what… £15 a pop via courier. Not good enough.

I enquired about a refund, because I didn’t want to risk another faulty unit and have to shell out another £15, no to the refund as I’ve had it for a few months, ok I don’t know what the actual law says on this, but let’s say for 1 second that I am not entitled to a refund, and a repair or replacement is all I’m entitled to. If it goes wrong again I have to fork out money to get it back to them, I think even as a good will gesture they should at least offer the refund even if I do send it back as my own expense after all ive only had the player for 2.5 months. Not good enough.

I think I am just going to keep my Denon, I can live with the fault as long as it doesn’t happen too often and the reset feature works ok then I’ll live with it, but it has taught me a few valuable lessons.

1.	Getting it a few quid cheaper online is not necessarily the better deal.
2.	I will never ever buy from Forum Hi-Fi in Nottingham again.
3.	Even Microsoft, the company we love to hate, will provide you free returns to them for items under warranty.

So beware, when you are looking to buy something that would cost a fair bit to return see if your local shop will match the price that you see online, even if it is £10 or £20 more, it maybe better getting it from them to save hassle if you have problems with it. If no-one will match the online price that you find then ask the shop about their returns policy and if it will cost you money to return something to them.

Last thoughts are this. I was told a long time ago that the true test of a company is when you come to use it’s customer services.

A film based on the computer game of the same name. I have to say that I am quite excited by this but I do have to remember that most computer game to film adaptations have never really hit the mark. There have been real stinkers and there have been some ok ones, but nothing truly outstanding.

What I am glad about in relation to this move is that Pirates of the Caribbean will be stopped/delayed. The 1st was good, the third was ok, so it’s a downward spiral for those films, time they were left.

I am getting quite excited by this now. I enjoyed the old Star Treks as a kid, Next Generation became a bit boring and Voyager was the only one I really enjoyed, Enterprise and Deep Space Nine I never saw. The films were ok I suppose but it had become tired and… well crap and I gave up on them well before Nemesis.

So reading these review snippets was like a breath of fresh air, I think it will need to be seen at the cinema this time. What are your opinions on the Star Trek Universe?

This is the part 1 to my Top10 wishlist of films to be brought out on Blu Ray that aren’t already available (hopefully the Blu Ray gods will read this and make my wishes come true!). I’ll run through the first 5 here, don’t think I’m going to do them in any particular order, just off the top of my head as I think of them. Some will be pretty obvious (I’m a scifi and fantasy fan afterall and there’re a couple of well known franchises that are yet to make an appearance in HD) but some not so.

No. 1 – I’ll kick off the list with one of my favorite sci-fi action films, Blade. I’ll include the other films here as well, but predominantly I want the first in the franchise. The nightclub scene at the start will be amazing in HD sound and the film overall will be brilliant in full HD. I’ve no idea why it hasn’t been released yet, from some of the obscure titles they’re releasing now you’d think a well received franchise like this would’ve been out ages ago. It’s just been given the HD treatment in America so hopefully a Blu Ray release is on the cards for us in the UK.

No.2 – Here I’ll put one of my more obscure, and guilty pleasure titles, the 1995 film Hackers. This highly stylised look at the hacking community can’t be taken too seriously, it’s a fun film with a very young Angelina Jolie and a great soundtrack. It reminds me of University days (and nights spent in the Hacienda) and of the computer game Wipeout for some reason. The soundtrack will definitely benefit from the HD treatment and the vivid colours used in the film style will pop nicely in HD. For the film’s fans like me out there I can find no plans to bring this to Blu Ray for the time being. Lets hope they get round to it soon!

No.3 – I’ll be a bit more predictable and go with Star Wars here (I held out as long as I could!). Again, I’ll go with the whole franchise in one choice, otherwise the top 10 list would be dominated with the sequels. I’ll even include the prequel films here as well, although my love will always be with the original trilogy. If they’ve got a decent source to get an HD transfer from then these will just be amazing on Blu Ray. Knowing George Lucas, he won’t want to bring them out until they’re near perfect as well (lets hope he doesn’t start tinkering with them again though!) but that means that, although their appearance on Blu Ray is inevitable, they might not appear for a while.

No. 4 – This one could be for region 2 DVD never mind Blu Ray. As far as I know it’s never been released over here (or if it was it went out of print very quickly and was never brought back). The film is Major League, a baseball comedy starring Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Wesley Snipes. I can’t say that I’m a huge sports film fan and have never really watched that much baseball (except when I’m in America and am bored in a hotel room) but for some strange reason I love this film. It brings together a great bunch of characters, has some great comedy and the usual feel good sports movie plot where a bunch of underachievers pull off the impossible and win. It’s not a big action film that’ll benefit from a great HD soundtrack, but the picture could be good. I’d just love to be able to add it to my collection!

No.5 – And before you know it here we are at the end of the first installment. I’ll end on another sci-fi/fantasy flick, Highlander. I’m can’t say I’m that bothered about the sequels for this one, just the original will do. This is a film that gets better after a few watches. The jumping through the timeline can be a bit confusing the first time through, but after you’ve got that straight it’s one of the all time classics. It’s not got that big a soundtrack, but the visuals could benefit greatly from the HD treatment. A lot of the scenes are in dark, murky conditions so the extra detail possible on a Blu Ray would be very welcome.

That’s the first installment over with (and not a single mention of a Hobit!). Check back for the other five, there might be a couple of surprises in there (for me as well, I’ve only just managed to scrape five together for this, need to go away and have a wander through my DVD collection!).

All the way back in 1982 a phenomenon hit our screens; the first (to my knowledge) computer graphics film reached our screens. It was called TRON, and it looked great, in a 1982 battlezone kind of way. Well it is being remade and it looks like Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner are going to be in the film again. Confusingly enough though it looks like the film is going to be called TRON which seems strange to me, especially after TR2N had been a popular idea and one that I think looks the part, or the more unimaginative TRON 2.0.

But remakes seem to be the thing at the moment, or at least visiting old movies to bring them up to date, Rambo, Star Trek, Batman, Indiana Jones etc to name but a few. I would be keen to go see TRON 2. The first time it came around I was a teenager and into gaming and the look at feel of it all was brilliant, now is 2011 when it due to be released I am still into gaming but of course the processing power for special effects is so much better now than it was then.

I found some Info online re a possible synopsis for the film.

The title will almost certainly NOT be TRON 2 or TR2N. Possibly something with a colon – TRON:

The story takes place approximately 25 years after the original.

The movie starts in 1989. Kevin Flynn (Bridges) has created some of the world’s top selling games based on his Game Grid challenges in the first film, and has marketed the hell out of what he saw there (action figures, Recognizer night lights, yadda yadda yadda).

Flynn has a seven year old son named Sean.

Flynn disappears, leaving behind his son.

Alan Bradley (Boxleitner) takes over Flynn’s company (ENCOM).

Jump forward in time: Sean is now twenty something.

Alan Bradley has info that leads Sean to look for Flynn.

Search takes Sean to Flynn’s old arcade – mothballed.

Into the computer world goes Sean.

There’s a CLU character (Flynn’s computer alter-ego from the first film).

Flynn has programmed CLU to run around and make a better computer world, but CLU’s gone corrupt and is creating his own interpretation of that perfect world. This is why CLU (young Bridges) is being such a punk-ass in that Comic Con footage we saw.

CLU has it out for a kind of program called ISOs & wants to eradicate them.

The ISOs believe Sean Flynn is the one who will free them from CLU’s belligerence.

Somewhere in the computer world, the real Kevin Flynn is whizzing around in a classic Light Cycle. Will he help in the battle against CLU?

Light Jets have jet walls, too.

Light Cycles versus Light Jets.

Big Disc battle!

Bridges going all out for this role. Embracing it. Fans will go gaa gaa.

[END OF LINE]
USER 2.0

Source – ainitcool.com
But with infinitely more films out there that may well be ripe for a remake, which ones would you like to see get a makeover? For me it would be Forbidden Planet and maybe a bit more controversially Alien. I think the original has stood the test of time so well, I would just love to see what they would do with a straight remake of the original in terms of effects.

One of the first things to hit you about watching this film, is it’s a film named after a car, that has nothing to do with racing, tuning or even driving cars. It’s a film about an old man, a Korean War veteran, that’s growing apart from his family and feels that the world has gone down the toilet, until he meets a couple of local kids who give him something to live for. Now that’s not to say that Gran Torino is in anyway mushy, because it isn’t; it’s a Clint Eastwood film through and through. Directed by Clint, Produced by Clint and Starring Clint, and as with any Clint Eastwood film you should expect a certain amount of growling, verbal abuse and action; which Gran Torino certainly provides.

Saying this is a Clint Eastwood film is no understatement, he couldn’t have made a bigger mark on this film if he tried, even his sons got involved; one in a starring role and another composed the score. The only thing Clint didn’t do, was write the screenplay, that was handled by a first time screenwriter Nick Schenk who frankly did a fantastic job, so good in fact that when Clint got hold of the script he insisted that the studios not be allowed to change a single word (changes were eventually made, but only changing Minnesota, where the film was originally set, to Michigan, where it was finally shot).

The plot is surprisingly simplistic, yet at the same time multi-layered and rich with thought provoking elements, not to mention a thoroughly believable angry old man that isn’t afraid to get stuck in and give the local gangs what for.

It begins, with Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) burying his wife, and his disapproval for the way the world is turning out is instantly shown, as his own grandchildren are dressed like they are going to a rave and making jokes at their grandmothers funeral, prompting the Dirty Harry growl and glare that will be used so often during the next two hours. Walt’s bitterness is not unfounded, and you can easily see why he has become so grumpy and withdrawn from his family as they are all lazy, some are dope smoking, all selfish and only spend time with him when they want something.

He doesn’t disown his family, but remains withdrawn from them and lives a mostly private life, with his main point of contact being the local priest who is determined to get Walt to go to confession (something he flat-out refuses to do). Another of his main gripes with the world is seeing the state of the neighbourhood, as all other Americans have left and he is now surrounded by Hmong people from South East Asia, something the inherently racist Walt cannot abide. One night it gets too much for him, as a local Hmong gang begin beating the boy who lives next door and when it spills onto Walt’s front garden he grabs his old service rifle and orders the gang away.

The next day he finds out that he has, quite by accident and irritatingly, become the neighbourhood hero praised by all the local Hmong who shower him with food and gifts. He objects to this at first, determined not to be liked, until (after helping the girl next door avoid a potentially nasty situation with some other local gang) he slowly starts to grow closer to the kids living next door. And as the young lad he ‘rescued’ promises to do work for him for a while they become friends, with Walt acting as a sort of father figure, helping Tao (the young boy) find a job and giving him advice on his love life.

But it’s not all hunky-dory from there on in, the gang that Walt shooed from his lawn keep causing trouble, which causes Walt to react, and things escalate to violence against his new friends, and as we all know Clint wont stand for it; he hatches a plan, and goes to sort the gang out, with severe consequences for those involved.

To sum up, Gran Torino is almost like a neo-Dennis The Menace, told from Wilson’s point of view. Clint Eastwood being Wilson, the grumpy old man that’s annoyed by youth, hates Dennis (Tao and the other Hmong next door) and is just after his privacy, before slowly growing to like Dennis, then riding to the rescue when he gets into trouble.

Now, you could be forgiven for thinking that this entire film was Hmong propaganda just written to show how lovely they are as a people, whilst every American portrayed in the film (including Walt) has a real attitude problem, with the white young stereotyped to be as obnoxious as possible. But this film isn’t propaganda, and was written by a white man, it’s simply a different way of telling the buddy/mentor stories that need to have two very different people thrust together, such as Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Men in Black.

The film isn’t overly action-packed but that doesn’t seem to matter because there is a real story here, one that will hook you in, keep you entertained and have you really caring what happens to the characters. Plus, what action there is, is extremely well done, not simply filler; with every shot successfully driving the story forward.

Characterisation is also well done here, with Clint Eastwood’s Walt embodying the way many people feel having their neighbourhoods overrun by gangs and foreigners; he is the grumpy old man inside all of us, wishing people were hardworking, private preferably white (in his eyes) and most importantly not near him. In fact when he becomes the hero of the neighbourhood he does so purely by accident; “Get off my lawn” he tells the gang, not ‘leave the boy alone’ or ‘nobody does that sort of thing in my neighbourhood’ – “Get off my lawn.” And his actions work, they are noble and really make you want to stand up and do something about the problems in your community. His character also stays believable all the way through, as he never does a complete u-turn like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, he accepts the people he likes, and is still short with everyone else; by the end of the film he is still calling Tao and his sister names like ‘egg-roll’ and ‘zipperhead’, however at some undefined point they shifted from being racial put-downs to affectionate nick-names.

The Hmong kids next door also seem well portrayed, I don’t pretend to know a lot about Hmong culture, but the kids are all traditional yet very American at the same time, and obviously have their own lives aside from the main story, not being completely tied to Walt.

This may not be a film for everyone, although even most people that usually dislike Clint Eastwood would get something positive out of this. Some people complain of slow pacing or a lack of action (I’ve already explain why the action isn’t an issue) and the pacing suits the style and tone of the film, in real life things wouldn’t kick off and finish in a day, it takes time to set things up and that time is put to good use here, fleshing out the characters and giving you something to care about. I would advise anyone to see the film as even if you are niggled by some small thing or are appalled by the racism early on, by the end you’ll have been happy, sad, annoyed and gung-ho, you’ll have laughed and you will appreciate what a good film this is.

To sum up, Gran Torino is basically a brilliant film. It’s Clint Eastwood’s first leading role since Million Dollar Baby, and whilst the sound of a 78 year old action hero wouldn’t normally fill me with confidence, he pulls it off perfectly, like no-one else could, and it is quite possibly the best I have ever seen him. It’s a film that will have you wanting to watch it again the second you finish, not because you’ll see the twists coming this time round, but simply because there hasn’t been a story this good, this well told, or this real, for years.

8/10

Oops, Friday the 13th again! Two months running, that must be a rare occurance. Having already written of my dislike of the horror genre (that was the Friday the 13th link) I think this time I’ll write about a genre that I like, and that would be sci-fi. Yes, I am a self confessed sci-fi geek! I guess I’m a bit of a stereotype in that I’m a scientist, I like video games and I love sci-fi. I do go against the stereotype in that I’m a strapping 6 footer who used to spend 3 hours a day in a gym lifting weights and doing cardio and generally look a bit like Grant Mitchell from East Enders. The weight training is very much in my past though. A wife and daughter (also bucking the geek tag) mean that the only time I have for sport is the badminton I play in the Manchester and Stockport leagues (no it’s not a nancy sport!).

What’s any of this got to do with sci-fi? Guess i wandered off there a bit trying to establish my geek credentials whilst playing them down slightly! One franchise I’ve always loved would be the Terminator franchise. i think I was about 14 when I saw Terminator for the first time (it had an 18 rating, but my Dad knew the video store owner so I could pretty much rent anything I wanted). It was a complete revelation, there may be early sci-fi films that touch on time travel, but I hadn’t seen them, to me it was a completely new concept. A few years later and we were treated to the sequel. Special effects had moved on considerably and again, the T1000 was a revelation. A lot of people would rather ignore the 3rd film, they tend to stick their fingers in their ears, chanting la la la la la it never happened, it never happened over and over. Personally, while I can see that it wasn’t the revelatory experience that the first two were, it’s ending made it worthwhile for me. Ever since I saw the first film, the film I really wanted to see was the one set in the future where the humans battle the machines. I wanted an entire film of Reese’s flashbacks, now that would be way cool!

And so now we come to Terminator Salvation (check out the latest, amazing, trailer at http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/terminatorsalvation/). It’s not looking quite as futuristic as Reese’s flashbacks, but it’s definitely getting there! It’s down for a May 22nd release (don’t know if that’s in the states or UK though) so hopefully not much of a wait. I know McG is directing it, which doesn’t immediately bode well, but I’m an eternal optomist and am hoping that the possibilities the franchise brings will raise his game to new heights.

It looks like being a big year for big franchises with the release of the new Star Trek film (check out trailer 3 here: http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/). I generally don’t like all this jumping around in the timeline of films. The idea of a prequel does not sit well with me (even with the sacred Star Wars!). From the trailer it does look interesting though, but that brings me to another point, trailers. I’ve lost count of the number of trailers that I’ve seen and thought ‘that looks awesome/hilarious’ only to be severly let down by the end result. It’s a great marketing ploy I have to admit. It generates buzz, shows off the best bits of the film and I’ve no doubt that a good trailer will increase the box office take of a film to some degree. It’s probably my own fault, I really shouldnt have bookmarked the apple trailers site, and I shouldn’t go there as regularly as I do. The problem is that a trailer always makes action films more exciting than they really are by cutting from one exciting sequence straight into another, making it seem like it’s one big thrill ride. Same thing with comedies. By cutting from one funny sequence to another it makes it appear as if it’s one long laugh-fest all throughout the film. Problem is that when you see the film in it’s entirity you learn that you pretty much saw all the funny bits in the trailer!

Sceptic as I am about trailers, I’m still suckered by them and will be booking my Terminator ticket asap! I’ll definitely go see the Star Trek as well, but might wait for reviews on that one though.

I just received my Blade Runner Region 1 Five Disc Ultimate Collectors Edition. Phew that was a mouthful. I already have the Region 2 Blade Runner set of the same elongated name. But why do I want 2 sets? Well the packaging on the R1 urinates all over the R2 packaging, even though the R2 has some cool things in it like picture cards etc the R1 has more, go on, click on the links and then click on the pictures for each just to see how awesome it all is…ok, did you check it out? Looks really good doesn’t it?

So what is the catch? And what the hell is the point to this post? Well that little box set cost £36 which was the cheapest price I found it at, and I ran the risk of being hit with a customs charged as it was region 1 and imported in (I guess)…

£36 is a lot of money. Well it is to me, and it is to a lot of people and for what really. A plastic outer case, some photo sheets, and plastic origami figure, a little car, a case and 5 discs, what is the actually build cost of that package I think I will row the boat out at say that to actually make that box set it cost £7.50, so with the mark up they make a hell of a lot of money on each box set sold. After all most of it is a marketing ploy rather than creating a really good quality set out of metal for example.

And the thing is I wouldn’t class myself as a serious collector, I couldn’t spend £100+ on the Alien Head DVD from Japan or example, all because the Japanese version had DTS sound tracks. What I want to know is why can they just not make that box set available in the UK (where I live) or in A N Other country (Where you may live?), why have they arranged it so that there are different sets, some much better than others in different parts of the world? It must be arranged by the studios.

But as with all things, items are only worth as much as someone was prepared to pay for it, and yes I was prepared to pay £36 and have two box sets of the same films (just different add-ons) so I guess I should just shut up and salivate over my new shiny box set. But looking through a forum’s trade list yesterday and there were OOP (Out Of Print) DVDs going like a steel book R1 Limited Edition of Blood Diamond going for £35 now to me that is not value, whereas I am prepared to pay £36 for the Blade Runner set, I am not prepared to pay £35 for a steel book of Blood Diamond (even though I think the film is really good). Personally I think that is a rip off and cannot see how that price can be justified.

So the upshot of this is that it is all down to perceived value rather than cost. I saw value in the Blade Runner set at £36 but not the Blood Diamond at £35, someone else may think the other way around. I think sometimes one can get a little carried away and buy anything at inflated prices because it has limited edition written on the front and you think there is only a few copies in circulation whereas in reality the Limited Edition (in most cases) is nothing but a title on a box.

What do you think?
